Demo Day 48

This Devlog outlines the changes since the last demo.

For those that played the last one this one might come as a bit of a surprise, as it is far less polished. Everything new feels pretty half-baked, at least to me,

The most obvious change are of course the new graphics, which ate up the majority of the time I've worked on this. Gone are the Game Boy looks as well as frustratingly tiny resolution.  I'm really quite happy with the look, although ti still lacks variety. I hope you enjoy the new look as much as I do.

A new title banner also made it in.

I also played around with some different gameplay loops from the basic linear levels. I played around with a timer mechanic, making the levels a lot less linear, and even a Super Mario 64 style mission structure but ultimately none of it really worked and was too involved for what was originally supposed to be a small project. There has been a major addition to the gameplay though. Each level now has three imprisoned light...thingies (yep, they still don't have a name) for you to rescue. The game keeps track of how many you have rescued and there's now a level select screen to retry levels.

Helmet pickups now come in these breakable crates. The idea is for them to have various items eventually but right now they're just used for the helmets.

There is now an option to set the game's aspect ratio. You can set it to 16:9, 16:10 or 4:3 for that retro feel. Keep in mind that the more square the aspect ratio the more vertical field of view you will get.

Some bug fixes also made it in, though not nearly as many as I'd like.

You can now throw the grappling hook again after getting hit or after hitting a metal block with it, consistently.

Inputs should hopefully not be dropped anymore.

I'm not really happy with this demo but I thought I'd let people take a look at the new artstyle and gameplay mechanic at least.

There might be a slew of new bugs I didn't notice while testing and I still haven't gotten to making sure configs are verified so you might have to delete any old config file again. Sorry for the inconvenience.
